“Goaltending is our life, Stan and I have always wanted to make a goalie mask that would not only be suitable for pros but goalies playing minor hockey too. We wanted to give goalies of all ages a goalie mask that had unparallel fit, feel and protection” Messina said. Messina’s business partner, Stan Matwijiw, is not only the goalie coach at the University of Michigan but also the Director of one of Michigan’s premier goalie schools, Bandits Goaltending School.  “We listened to a lot of goalies likes and dislikes about goalie masks, took their advice and went to the drawing table with it from day one. That’s how the slogan came about, Designed By Goalies For Goalies. This project had many twists and turns along the way but we stayed true to our word and gave goalies what they asked for from the start,” added Matwijiw.

The actual shell of a Masked Marvel is constructed using state of the art military grade carbon fiber and Kevlar material. The sheer strength, balance and weight of this 2.16 lb helmet design are truly unmatchable. This is achieved by using a custom crafted titaniumcage on every mask. Yes, this is an extraordinary industry first. Each mask comes standard with a titanium cat eye or HECC approved cage. “Joe and I needed to come up with a unique feature that would distinguish our goalie masks from the rest of the competition. We gave goalies not only a mask that was extremely light weight but a cage that could take the physical abuse of a hockey puck traveling at speeds of over 100 mph,” Matwijiw said. To reach consistency, durability and strength, each helmet is vacuumed molded with a predetermined amount of fiber and proprietary hybrid resin. Each helmet shell is cut using a precision water jet, which in turn provides consistent trimming and promotes strength throughout the entire mask. The triangular vent holes in the mask’s chin area and the cage drill holes in the forehead have been removed to add additional strength and durability in the overall shell design.

The inside of the helmet is crafted just as meticulously as the outside. Every mask comes with a comforting WikMax sweat band that pulls away moisture from the forehead instead of leaving the forehead dry, itchy and raw as usual terrycloth sweatbands do. Masked Marvel Helmets are fitted with black custom shock absorbing Vinyl Nitrile closed cell padding. Each piece of padding has acoustical components within each shape to ensure reduction in vibration and ringing when the mask is struck by a puck. Each mask is fitted individually to guarantee fit, feel and protection. “We looked at a lot of our students’ masks in our goalie school and majority of them had masks that were not fitted properly. We wanted to fix this problem so they were protecting the most important part on their body, their head,” Messina added.

With over 2 years of research and development, Masked Marvel Custom Goalie Helmets has just received the prestigious Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) seal of approval. The rigorous HECC certification program validates manufacturers and the equipment they produce.  The requirements designated by HECC are designed to make the consumer aware that the piece of equipment has passed all tests and is suitable to be worn for the specific area it was deigned to protect.  A goalie mask must be HECC approved in order to be worn at the USA Hockey, the National Federation of State High School Association and NCAA level. “Getting HECC approval was a big deal to us from the beginning when this mask was still just a conceptual design. We always wanted consumers to know we were producing a goalie mask that was not only going to get HECC approved but was going to be a superior goalie mask line from the beginning,” Messina explained.
